Advent Cycle B: Preparing for Christ – December 2017
4 Week Personal or Group Study with Fr. Mitch Pacwa
(Cycle B begins December 3, 2017)
Join us this Advent as we take 4 weeks to prepare ourselves for the coming of Christ! Are we ready for the King? Are our hearts ready to receive our Savior? The four weeks leading up to Christmas mark the beginning of the Western Church's liturgical year. Advent is our time for reflection, meditation and preparation.
This year the Sunday gospel readings at Mass come from the Gospel of Mark. Our engagement with this gospel, woven with other parts of Scripture, like Isaiah, 1 Corinthians, and 2 Samuel creates a beautiful tapestry of prepared anticipation for the Christ Child coming to the world and into our hearts.
This study follows the Catholic Scripture Study format but concentrates on the Sunday lectionary readings and incorporates the ancient method of Lectio Divina (praying the scriptures). Lectio Divina is a powerful way to ‘hear’ God speaking to us personally through scripture.
To prepare, each participant reads the Sunday readings along with the "Points to Ponder" commentary, answers the Study Questions & Questions for Reflection and "prays the scriptures".
Added elements: Catechism Connections, Rome to Home and Voices of the Saints.
Individual Study Guide (answers included separately)

Commentary by Scott Hahn and Mark Shea - presented by Fr. Matthew Kauth
We are the Body of Christ, but how often do we consider exactly what that means? What sets us apart from the rest of the world as members of Christ’s own body?
These are the questions confronted head-on by St. Paul in his powerful, fascinating Letter to the Ephesians. In this detailed 6-chapter exegesis, rather than shying away from the great “mystery of Christ” that defines the letter, Scott Hahn and Mark Shea expertly lead you to contemplate what it means for you to share in Christ’s Body. Fr. Matthew Kauth also urges you to accept this challenge as you learn in 10 lessons:
-What “new thing under the sun” God has done for us
-How the relationship between husband and wife points to Christ and His Church
-Why “justification by faith” is only the beginning of a truly Christian life
St. Paul’s unquenchable passion for the faith is obvious in this beautiful epistle, as well as his passion for the mystery of Jesus Christ. His goal was to open people’s minds to the fundamental question of who Jesus is, and why we should care. Let St. Paul’s words fill you with renewed zeal as he sets you on the road of the saints.

Commentary by Mike Aquilina - presented by Fr. Mitch Pacwa
Every Sunday, Roman Catholics (like many other Christians) stand to profess their faith in the God who created "all things visible and invisible." We also confess our sins in the presence of "all the angels and saints." But how often do we really think about these unseen creatures who are always ready to help us?
In 10 well-researched lessons, Mike Aquilina and Fr. Mitch Pacwa draw on the saints, the Catechism, and Scripture to remind you of the precious gift God has given us in the good angels. You will also find that learning about them helps you discover more about the God who created them!
Discover that angels are spiritual, personal, and immortal creatures, with intelligence and freewill, who glorify God without ceasing and serve him as special messengers of his saving plan!

Commentary by Steve Ray - presented by Fr. Patrick Winslow
The Acts of the Apostles is the first history of the Church, and as such, merits a study as careful as it is well-researched. Luke’s motive in writing this book was very simple: to defend and teach the new faith in a beautiful work of apologetics.
Steve Ray and Fr. Patrick Winslow are your guides on this 1,000+ verse journey into the hearts and minds of the early Christians. Harmonizing history, theology, and eternal truth, St. Luke’s witness is a stirring invitation to follow the one he followed—the one who brought death to its knees.
In 28 comprehensive lessons, you will learn:
-How the Apostles’ message of repentance is just as vital for us today
-Why the Church was able to survive brutal, constant persecutions
-How we can be filled with the same Holy Spirit that inspired Peter, Paul, and all the early Christians
The Acts of the Apostles are the acts of those with hearts on fire. We are called to the same fearless love, no matter what challenges or persecutions come our way. Let Steve Ray and Fr. Winslow unpack this story of hope for you, and let your heart beat with the same fervor that inspired the first Christians.

- CSS is pleased to bring you this short study series exploring the documents of the Second Vatican Council. Most Catholics are familiar with Vatican II and have likely heard the phrase, "…in the spirit of Vatican II…". However, few Catholics have actually read the documents. Consequently, the "Spirit of Vatican II" has come to mean many different things depending upon the source. We encourage all Catholics to take the time to study these important documents for themselves to discover the ideas that accurately reflect the Council teachings.
